Navigating mental health care in NH

Posted on June 30, 2023June 30, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

DJ Bettencourt is the deputy commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department. Contact the NH Insurance Department for assistance at 603-271-2261 or consumerservices@ins.nh.gov.

According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in five American adults live with a mental illness, and more than one in 25 adults live with a serious mental illness. This means that we all know someone who may need help, and as our mental health changes over time, it is even possible that you might be that person in need.

Each year, the month of May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. It is critical that individuals know how to obtain mental health assistance when they need it. No one experiencing mental illness, including their family and loved ones, needs to go through this struggle alone.

Finding the right mental health professional or program may seem daunting, but it does

Phillips accuses Neudorf of supporting paid health care, Neudorf responds

Posted on June 25, 2023June 25, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

Phillips added, “While the UCP wants you to pull out your debit card at the emergency room, I promise you this: with an Alberta NDP government, led by Rachel Notley, the only card you will ever use to access care is your health care card.”

Neudorf responded to the accusation, saying his priorities are to keep health care public.

He explained in a news release from the UCP on May 11, “I have always been a strong supporter of public health care. I voted for a budget that added an additional $1 billion to Alberta’s public health care system and my wife is a proud registered nurse. I also supported the Public Health Guarantee and the $24 billion, 10-year health care funding agreement with the federal government. Because of these efforts, no Albertan will have to pay out-of-pocket to see a doctor or access needed health care services.”

DOT chief: No going back to lockdowns

Posted on June 19, 2023June 19, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

MANILA, Philippines —  In the face of concerns over rising COVID-19 cases, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco made clear yesterday that there’s no going back to lockdowns.

Despite the tourism industry being battered by the pandemic for over two years, Frasco expressed confidence in its path to full recovery.

“We simply cannot go back to lockdowns, and the President has declared the same,” she reiterated. Instead, Frasco emphasized the need for economic recovery and the restoration of what was lost while harnessing the potential of Philippine tourism.

She said the World Health Organization (WHO)’s earlier declaration of the end of COVID-19 as a global health emergency should alleviate general fears surrounding the pandemic and cited how Filipinos have become more informed in managing their health.

Wearing of masks is now optional, but individuals experiencing symptoms or in crowded areas with potential cases are encouraged to wear masks, she added.

Ofsted urges Care Learning Centre to enhance apprentice support

Posted on May 31, 2023May 31, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

The Care Learning Centre (CLC), who specialise in offering apprenticeships in the health and care sector, have dropped from a ‘Good’ rating with Ofsted to ‘Requires improvement’.

The organisation was inspected in March 2023 – its first inspection since June 2016 – with around 375 apprentices on standards-based apprenticeships.

Inadequate teaching time
The inspector found that although most apprentices demonstrated a positive attitude towards their learning, were punctual and attended their planned sessions well, they did not get adequate teaching time to cover the whole curriculum or visit topics in depth.

Apprentices promoted to more senior positions
Given the skills shortages in the health and social care sector since Covid-19, leaders at CLC have developed a curriculum to provide valuable training for new and existing staff.

However, the inspector found that as a result, many apprentices are promoted to more senior positions while undertaking or on completion of their apprenticeship.

Commercial drivers urge halt to health check plans

Posted on May 31, 2023May 31, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino
Commercial drivers are urging the government to reconsider a plan to lower the age for mandatory health checks, saying it’s causing panic in the sector.

Currently, commercial vehicle drivers aged 70 or above have to undergo a medical examination every one to three years. Following a spate of accidents involving older drivers, the Transport Department is planning to lower the age for such checks to 65.

But the Motor Transport Workers General Union on Friday warned that the move could worsen a labour shortage in the industry, as it petitioned the government to abandon the planned change.

At a Legco panel meeting, lawmakers also urged officials to reconsider the plan.

“65 is considered a healthy age… Can we require those aged between 65 and 70 to do check-ups every two years? For those aged 70 above, we can require them to do check-ups annually,” DAB lawmaker Chan Hok-fung said.

Lack of time and motivation main barriers to healthy living

Posted on May 31, 2023May 31, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

Feeling tired and not having enough time or motivation are the biggest obstacles to people getting fit and adopting healthier lifestyles, according to new research.

The poll saw more than 2,000 UK adults respond to a question about what prevents them from making healthy changes to their diet and being more physically active.

The results show that a lack of confidence, rising food prices and the price of gym membership were also factors as to why people find it difficult to maintain healthy eating and exercise routines.

However, around a quarter of people who answered the poll said that nothing stops them from keeping active and eating healthy foods.

The survey, carried out by YouGov for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), found that:

  • 38% said lack of motivation was the main barrier to them leading a healthy lifestyle
  • 35% said they are ‘too tired’ to exercise
  • 26% said they

Markey plugs health care plan | North Of Boston

Posted on May 31, 2023May 31, 2023 by Helen E. Trevino

BOSTON — U.S. Sen. Ed Markey is touting a new proposal that calls for spending hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade to deal with climate change and its impact on economic inequality and health care access.

The Democratic-led proposal, which was unveiled last month, calls for dramatically increasing federal funding for community health centers that were on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of a broader effort to improve access to health care for “under-served” communities.

Markey said the proposal is an attempt to deal with the “simultaneous crises” of climate change, social and economic inequality and barriers to health care.

“This is a crisis,” the Massachusetts Democrat said in live-streamed remarks at a Lawrence health clinic on Wednesday, flanked by local officials. “Frontline communities are suffering the impacts of climate change, and the pandemic has stretched our health care system to the
