What effect can social networks have on the mental health of younger generations? While some of the consequences of inappropriate social media use on the physical health of children are now known, it is difficult to assess the damage they can have on well-being and self-esteem.

This, however, is what worries more and more parents, some of whom are starting to feel overwhelmed by the phenomenon, as revealed by a new study conducted in the United States.

Widely considered to be one of the major public health issues of our times, along with sedentary lifestyles, mental health is currently the focus of much scientific research, as well as new prevention strategies.

This is especially the case when it comes to the mental health of children and adolescents, which has deteriorated considerably since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Teen tells of lack of mental health support despite abuse in state care

A teenager who has spent his entire life in the care of the state says the government is failing to address the mental health of young vulnerable people.

A report from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission found that one in four young people in need of mental health care were being admitted to adult services due to a lack of age-appropriate units around the country.

Ihorangi Reweti-Peters, 17, has lived in care since he was only a few months old.

His memories of foster care were a ‘living nightmare’, the Christchurch teenager said.

“I had a rough time in care. I was faced with racism, discrimination, physical, emotional and on one count sexual abuse.

“Those experiences in family homes, in foster homes were awful and no young person should have faced what I have.”

Canada is grappling with a ticking time bomb of violence, addiction and suicide linked to failing mental health services for its young people.

In the streets and subways of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, an ultra-modern metropolis that acts as a window into the nation’s economy and culture, many young people can be seen wandering, their eyes staring into space, shouting incomprehensibly.

Newspapers are filled with accounts of unprovoked attacks on strangers, opioid overdoses and other societal ills linked to addiction and mental health problems.
